It is said that in the digital world of today, one can say
almost nothing is local but that can be changed.

Sure there are dishonest men in local government.
But there are dishonest men in national government too.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR ... EXAMINER

The north south divide is becoming more evident in Tasmania than it has been for some time. Launceston’s and Hobart’s mayors could never be more different than can be seen currently.

“Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds welcomed the news, in particular the university’s 10-year commitment to pay general rates for all its inner-city properties.” LCC News April 6. [http://lcc63.blogspot.com/2019/04/prof-rufus-black-plays-another-card.html
]

Compare and contrast the situation in Launceston. In a nutshell, Launceston was seduced in ‘gifting’UTas land arguably worth $10Million plus today with no prospect of UTas ever paying rates for any of its property.

Mayor Anna Reynolds says Hobart’s negotiations with UTas “provides the council and Hobart community confidence that the university is going to pay its way investing in public infrastructure that will be needed to support this [UTas’s]move into the city,”

She has also said. “As Lord Mayor I have discussed with Vice-Chancellor Black the need for a clear agreement on city planning and the adequate funding of infrastructure, so I welcome his comments”.

No such noises coming out of Mayor van Zetten’s or Prof. Black’s mouths, indeed almost the contrary.

Clearly UTas has taken Launceston’s Council for a ‘pack of dills’ and right now this would seem to be on the money.
